Soul Tattoo, the South African husband and wife duo of Clive Hay and Renata Whaits (Hay).

Clive and Renata, as individuals and as a duo, have accumulated a wealth of musical experience, having previously played in various bands, toured and released their own albums.

Clive has been a professional musician for the last 20 years, as a solo artist as well as playing with popular South African bands.

The guitar was his chosen instrument at the age of 10, followed by the piano at 13. Starting with the talent to play these instruments by ear, Clive progressed to two years of classical guitar training in his late teens.

His music also took him travelling, from Europe, busking in Norway and performing in Finland, to popular, top 40 sounds of the day. On his return to South Africa, he set about recording his first album. His solo career has included a Sarie award nomination, numerous radio and television appearances including Good Morning South Africa, and playing at venues ranging from pubs, hotels, and restaurants to weddings, 21sts, Bar – and Bat Mitzvahs and large corporate functions.

Clive is due to release his next album shortly. He is talented and skilled composer and arranger, writing and arranging much of his own music. Two of his most popular songs “Eyes Of The Beholder” and “Advice” were top hits on South African national radio and still receive regular airplay on national radio today.

Renata’s musical career started out as a hobby both at school and later at university and included the study of classical and jazz piano as well as guitar. Her pre-dominant training and vocation was in the very busy world of retail fashion, working as a senior buyer for a major company based in South Africa.

For seven years Renata managed to combine a hectic working life and overseas buying trips with her love of music and started as a semi professional music career in her early twenties, playing with a band called “The Huppies” which did the rounds at various clubs, sports bars and private functions. She released her first solo album in 1998, which scored her a place as finalist in the CBSA music awards as well as various appearances on South African national Television.

The birth of Soul Tattoo was in 1994 when Clive and Renata met in a recording studio whilst Clive was working on an album recording. They began singing and performing together and later married in 1997.

Soul Tattoo boast an impressive repertoire, playing popular sounds from the 50’s to the present day, with a good variety of ballads as well as up-tempo dance music style, flexibility and professional have made them a very popular duo.
